About the Feldenkrais Method

“We are training body awareness”
– Dr. Susan Hillier

The Feldenkrais Method is based on principles of physics, biomechanics and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. By expanding your perception and increasing awareness, you will become more aware of your habits and tensions and develop new ways of moving.

Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais developed the Feldenkrais Method. He was born in 1904 in Slavuta, present-day Ukraine. At age 14, he left his home and travelled to Tel Aviv. He moved to France to continue his education where he received his doctorate in engineering at the Sorbonne in 1945. He worked for several years in the French nuclear research program in the laboratory of Joliot-Curie. He was also very involved in the martial arts. A chronic knee injury prompted him to apply his knowledge of physics, body mechanics, neurology and psychology to experiment with human movement. Feldenkrais emphasized the importance of body awareness in improving physical function and well-being. He passed away in 1984, leaving a lasting impact on bodywork and rehabilitation practices.

“If you know what you are doing, you can do what you want.”
